The 2nd Bootle Scout Group- St. Elizabeth of Hungary
 
This year our District Grand Prefect Rt.W.Bro.Mark Barton decided that one of the Allied charitable contribution should be to support youth organisations such as Scouts, Army Cadets, Police Cadets, RAF Cadets etc. and in August this year an opportunity to support the Scouts presented itself via W.Bro. Brian Povey (District Grand Treasurer) to help the Scout Group named in this articles heading.

On the 2nd of July 2026 the storage unit used by these Scouts to store all their camping and scouting equipment was subject to an arson attack and all was destroyed. Therefore, briefly, I would like to explain what the Scout movement stands for and what was in danger of being lost.
 
Mr. Peter Duffy is the Scout District Commissioner for Altside (Covering Sefton and Kirkby) Altside is one of 11 Districts that make up the Merseyside Scout Council, and he is in charge of the 2nd Bootle at St. Elizabeths Junior school, having served 35 years up to now in this post (his father served 40  years).
The following units under Peters immediate care and guidance are-
  Dreys of Squirrels aged 4-6
  Colonies of Beavers   aged 6-8
  Cub Packs    aged 8-10.5
  Scout Troops  aged 10.5-14
  Young Leaders  aged 14-18

As well as enjoying plenty of adventures and tasks members from the very start go on a journey to understand who they are and what they stand for. Cubs explore this idea by making a promise concerning principals that all Cubs must agree on, such as the importance of treating everyone in the Pack with kindness and doing their best for the community and wider world in which they live, making a positive contribution to society and sticking by their values. (Sounds familiar)
 
This promise is not to be taken lightly and calls for much consideration and preparation before it can proceed. Many Scouts have passed through all the grades mentioned and have gone on to be Leaders.
 
Due to the continued hard work of the Commissioner and his many assistants The 2nd Bootle Group remains a fantastic place for young people to attend and to achieve fantastic life ethics. Membership numbers are close to maximum and long may this continue.
 
W.Bro. Povey and I were taken on a guided tour of the premises by Peter with a full explanation of their aims and hopes for the future, with an introduction to all the children and staff who were taking part in various activities. We were treated as V.I.P.s!
 
The Allied Degrees contribution to The 2nd Bootle Scouts Group will assist the dedicated leaders and helpers to continue their excellent efforts.

Brian and I were both made honorary Scouts and presented with Scout neckerchiefs and woggles as modelled by myself, which cannot be worn with a tie!
